What is PlayStation Plus
PlayStation Plus is Sony's gaming subscription service for PS4 and PS5. It started as a simple online-multiplayer requirement plus monthly free games in 2010, and was substantially restructured in 2022 into the current three-tier model with the integration of the old PlayStation Now cloud streaming service.
PS Plus serves a different strategic role than Xbox Game Pass. Where Microsoft uses Game Pass as a flagship distribution channel — putting day-one first-party releases on the subscription — Sony continues to sell first-party PlayStation games at full price on launch day and adds them to the PS Plus catalogue a year or more later, if at all. This isn't a flaw; it's a deliberate business model difference. But it dramatically changes the value calculation between the two subscriptions.
Plans available
Three tiers:
- PS Plus Essential — online multiplayer, 2-3 free games per month (keep while subscribed), exclusive store discounts, cloud save backup. Required for online play in most games.
- PS Plus Extra — everything in Essential plus the Game Catalogue (hundreds of PS4 and PS5 games to download and play).
- PS Plus Premium — everything in Extra plus the Classics Catalogue (PS1, PS2, PSP, original PlayStation titles), cloud streaming, and time-limited game trials of newer releases (typically 2 hours to try before buying).
Each tier is available in 1-month, 3-month, and 12-month billing. The annual option offers a meaningful per-month discount but commits you to a year up front. Sony has raised prices multiple times since the 2022 restructuring, so always check the current rate before subscribing.
Why "PS Plus Essential" feels mandatory rather than optional
Essential is a different kind of subscription than Extra or Premium. For most PS5 games, online multiplayer requires Essential — without it, you can't play online matches in Call of Duty, FIFA/EA FC, Fortnite (free-to-play games are excluded, but most non-free games require it), or any other multiplayer title. The exception is a small number of free-to-play games which Sony exempts.
This means Essential is effectively a tax on owning a PS5 if you play online at all. The "free monthly games" aspect is a softener — Sony positions Essential as a value-add bundle rather than purely a multiplayer paywall — but most subscribers treat it as the cost of doing business if they're going to play online.
The honest framing: Essential is comparable to Xbox's Game Pass Core (multiplayer access plus a small library) — both are platform-mandatory if you play online. Extra and Premium are the real subscription decisions; Essential is overhead.
When PS Plus is worth upgrading
Essential is worth it (or rather, required) if:
- You play any online multiplayer on PS5 (most subscribers fall here by default)
- You don't have cloud save backup elsewhere
Extra is worth the upgrade if:
- You'd download and play several games from the catalogue per year
- You like having a backlog of titles to dip into between full-price purchases
- You play across genres and benefit from the variety
- You've already played most of the first-party Sony titles you'd want and the catalogue extends your library
Premium is worth the upgrade if:
- You specifically value retro/classic PlayStation games (Premium is the only legitimate way to access many PS1/PS2 titles on PS5)
- You'd use cloud streaming regularly (good fibre/5G, away from main console often)
- You use game trials to evaluate purchases before buying
When PS Plus is worth reconsidering
It's worth reconsidering if:
- You only play single-player and don't need online — Essential isn't doing anything for you
- You haven't claimed the free monthly games in months
- You upgraded to Extra or Premium but haven't downloaded any catalogue games
- You're on Premium but never use cloud streaming or the Classics Catalogue
- You bought the games you wanted outright at launch — Essential covers your online needs, Extra is redundant
How to track PS Plus and gaming subscription stacking
The most common PlayStation Plus problem isn't the subscription itself — it's gamers paying for both Game Pass and PS Plus and Nintendo Switch Online simultaneously without auditing whether they actually need all three. Many households have all three running and only use one of the consoles regularly.
GetRenewal tracks PS Plus alongside your other gaming subscriptions:
- Annual cost projection — PS Plus Premium at 12-month cadence is a real line item, and the annual renewal is easy to forget
- Renewal reminder before the next billing cycle
- Gaming-category view that surfaces total spend across PS Plus, Xbox Game Pass, Nintendo Switch Online, EA Play, etc.
- A nudge if you've stopped playing on PS5 — when consoles go cold, the subscription often quietly continues
If you have multiple consoles in the house and subscribe to each platform's gaming service, the audit is straightforward: which one(s) get played in a typical week? If PS5 isn't in that list, PS Plus may have outlived its usefulness in your current gaming habits.
How to cancel PS Plus
- Sign in at playstation.com
- Hover over your profile picture (top-right) → Account Settings
- Click Subscriptions in the sidebar
- Click Turn Off Auto-Renew next to PlayStation Plus
- Confirm
Your subscription continues until the end of the current billing period. You can also cancel from the PS5 itself: Settings → Users and Accounts → Account → Payment and Subscriptions → Subscriptions → PlayStation Plus → Turn Off Auto-Renew.
After cancellation, online multiplayer access ends, the Game Catalogue and Classics Catalogue games stop being playable, and any cloud saves you made via PS Plus stop syncing. Games you bought outright with real money remain yours; only PS Plus library content goes away.
If you signed up via the PlayStation Store with stored payment methods, those payment methods stay on file unless you remove them — useful if you intend to resubscribe later, but worth knowing if you want a clean break.
Alternatives to PS Plus
The closest peers:
- Xbox Game Pass — Microsoft's equivalent. Different platform; the better value for first-party-day-one fans, as discussed above
- Nintendo Switch Online — Nintendo's smaller subscription. Online play plus classic game library plus save backup
- GeForce Now — NVIDIA's cloud gaming for PC games. Different platform and model
- EA Play — EA games subscription, included in Game Pass Ultimate, available separately
- Just don't subscribe — for single-player-only PlayStation gamers, skipping PS Plus entirely is genuinely viable
For PlayStation owners, PS Plus Essential is hard to escape if you play online. Extra and Premium are real choices that depend on your gaming style. The combination of "play PS5 + play online + want a backlog of titles" leads most subscribers to Extra; Premium is more niche.
Frequently asked questions
Is PS Plus worth it?
Essential is essentially required if you play online — it's the gatekeeper for multiplayer on PS5 for most games. The question of whether to go up to Extra or Premium is the real choice. Extra makes sense if you'd download and play several games from the catalogue per year — the math works out clearly. Premium is the most niche tier — worth it if you specifically value the Classics Catalogue or use cloud streaming. For many gamers, Extra is the sweet spot.
How does PS Plus compare to Xbox Game Pass?
Different strategies. Xbox Game Pass Ultimate puts every Microsoft Studios first-party release on the subscription on day one (Halo, Forza, Starfield, the new Call of Duty). PS Plus does not — Sony's first-party games (Spider-Man, God of War, The Last of Us) come to the catalogue eventually, typically a year or more after release, never on day one. This is the biggest single difference between the two subscriptions and the main reason Game Pass is widely considered better value for first-party-focused gamers.
What happens to the free monthly games when I cancel?
You keep access to games you claimed while subscribed for as long as you're subscribed — they disappear from your library when your subscription lapses. If you resubscribe later, the games come back. This is different from Games with Gold (the old Xbox 360 model) where you kept games permanently after claiming. PS Plus's library is essentially a rental.
Is the cloud streaming on Premium actually usable?
It depends on your internet connection. PS Plus Premium streams games from Sony's servers at 1080p (with some 4K titles). On a strong fibre or 5G connection it works well; on slower or higher-latency connections, input lag becomes a problem. Cloud streaming is also limited to a subset of the catalogue, not every title in Extra/Premium is streamable. Useful for trying a game before downloading the full install or for playing away from your main PS5, but not a replacement for native console gaming.
How do I avoid auto-renewal on PS Plus?
PS Plus renews annually by default (1, 3, and 12-month options at signup; the 12-month plan is cheapest per-month). Most renewal traps come from people who signed up for an annual plan and forgot — the gap between charges is long. A subscription tracker like GetRenewal flags annual renewals before they hit and shows your annual gaming subscription spend.
